VCD Open Lecture: The Overlooked Style of Virtual Worlds

Fashion has always been a way to express identity, creativity, and a sense of belonging. But what happens when fashion moves beyond the physical world and into virtual spaces?

From the earliest text-based games to the imaginative worlds of World of Warcraft, The Sims, and Roblox, fashion has played an important, yet often overlooked, role in shaping our experiences in digital environments.

In this open lecture, fashion and gaming researcher Fija Dahlia will explore the evolution of in-game fashion, revealing how clothing, avatars, and virtual identities have become powerful tools for self-expression and creative experimentation.

The lecture will examine how fashion in virtual worlds differs from fashion in the physical world, how gaming environments challenge traditional ideas of style and identity, and what designers can learn from these emerging forms of digital culture.

It will also invite us to take a closer look at the relationship between physical and digital fashion, the possibilities of creative expression, and the potential for developing more sustainable design approaches.

Can virtual worlds change the way we think about fashion in the real world?

Join us in exploring fashion that goes beyond the boundaries of the physical world.
